brief history

On May 18, 1979, a group of civic-minded Filipino accountants from the metropolitan Washington DC area gathered to consolidate their diverse ideas, energies and professional experiences, and organized a unique and professional organization called - Association of Filipino Accountants, Inc. (AFAI). From a handful of members, AFAI evolved into a strong and united organization as it made its valuable contributions to the Filipino community and its members. Notable service contributions include: free tax-preparation service to senior citizens, lectures on tax-related matters to new immigrants; seminars and workshops to update the community on government regulations affecting their respective organizations; and, networking and job referral service for its members.

The continued growth of AFAI during the next 25 years inspired its officers and members of the AFAI Board of Directors to re-incorporate in order to be a more effective professional organization for its members and the community. On November 2, 2007, AFAI re-incorporated and renamed its organization to Filipino American Institute of Accountants of Metro D.C. Inc - FAIA - and eventually obtained its 501(c)3 status from the Internal Revenue Service. To further enhance the accounting profession of its members and non-members, FAIA applied for and was approved on May 1, 2008, by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy - NASBA - as a sponsor of continuing professional education (CPE) on the National Registry of CPE providers. As a NASBA sponsor, FAIA is committed to adhere to nationally recognized standards as it delivers services to the accounting profession.
